Garages
We own and manage garages on a number of sites and rent these out to council tenants, leaseholders, private residents and businesses. Priority is given to Council tenants and, wherever possible, residents living in the vicinity of a garage site, when offering a garage for let.
Garages are let for the sole purpose of keeping a vehicle only.
Your responsibilities (including garages attached to a property)
- Replace keys or locks to garages when the keys are lost or broken - St Albans District Council does not keep spare keys
- Repair any damage caused by you, a member of your family, or a visitor to your garage
- Insurance of any contents in the garage – we will not be held liable for loss, damage, theft of items
Please note: if you rent a garage it MUST only be used for a vehicle and NOT for storage.
Advice
- If a problem is caused by vandalism or a break-in you MUST report it to the police and get a crime reference number, otherwise we will charge you for the repair
- If you caused the damage, we expect you to get it repaired yourself
- If you cannot lock your garage, you are responsible for the security of anything left inside.

Update to application process
If you have already applied to be put on to the Garage Application waiting list before August 2024 you should have recently received an email. Please follow the instructions and link provided in the email.
Alternatively if you applied for a garage after August 2024 you do not need to do anything further as you are already a part of the new application service.
Please note this will not affect your current place in the Garage Application queue. The process is to update our records and provide you with a higher quality and more accurate Application service.

How to apply for a garage
If you are a council tenant and your rent account is in arrears or have any former tenant arrears, you will not be considered for a garage.
When we have received your application and if there is a garage available in your area of choice you will be offered this within five working days.
If we do not have a garage in your area available, you will be added to the waiting list and sent written confirmation of this. You do not have to accept any garage you are offered, and you will be put back on the waiting list.

Terminating my garage tenancy Toggle accordion
You must give four weeks’ notice that you wish to terminate your garage tenancy.
All tenancies end on a Sunday. Therefore, if a key is received on a Wednesday that tenancy would end a week and half later.
Returning the garage keys Toggle accordion
The outgoing tenant is responsible for making sure that the keys are returned to the council. They can be handed in at the reception desk at the council offices or returned in the post using a tracked postal service such as recorded or special delivery.
If you do not return the keys, or if the keys are lost, we will charged for the cost of having to change the lock on the garage.
