Your event's sustainability strategy

In line with the Council's sustainability strategy, we would like anybody planning an event on Council land to consider sustainability at the very earliest stages of planning their event.

Organisers who deliver demonstrably sustainable events:

  • Set sustainability as a priority early in the planning process
  • Ensure buy-in across all levels of the event
  • Appoint somebody to take the lead on this aspect of event planning
  • Create an action plan showing commitments and milestones
  • Consider sustainability in all aspects of decision making

Creating your sustainability strategy Toggle accordion

Your sustainability strategy should take into account the following aspects:

  • Waste and recycling. Consider cup re-use schemes, on-site waste management (litter picking, how to ensure that recycling remains uncontaminated) what packaging you will allow your caterers to use, etc
  • Transport. Consider food miles/local sourcing, the transport of goods and services involved in the construction and de-rig of the event, how your attendees will get to the event (investigate public transport options and tell ticket-holders about them).
  • Power at the event. Consider how you can power your event most sustainably - biodiesel generators? Solar power?
  • Way-finding. If yours is a regular event, consider creating signage that you can use year after year. Do you need paper maps and programmes? Could you create an event app to allow visitors to access information about the event from their phones?
  • Promotions. Ditch the novelty gonks and cheap plastic pens - if you must have a giveaway, how about a seed bomb?
