Tree planting in Clarence Park marks Worms twinning visit
Visitors from Worms planted a tree in Clarence Park to mark their recent twinning visit to St Albans that took in historic, leisure and cultural attractions.
During their stay, the delegation from the German city visited various St Albans Food and Drink Festival events, including the beer festival and the street ‘feastival’.
They were also treated to a sightseeing tour of historic St Albans that included the City’s medieval Clock Tower as well as the Roman Theatre.
Marrying the old with the new, the group was briefed on community development projects undertaken by St Albans City and District Council. This included visits to the recently rebuilt Batchwood Sports Centre and the old Town Hall which is being turned into a new museum and art gallery.
The Worms delegation included Oberbürgermeister Mayor Michael Kissel and members of the German city’s Friendship Group. They were accompanied on trips by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the City and District of St Albans and members of St Albans Partnership.
The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said: “It was a delight to welcome the delegation from Worms to St Albans and to show them what our City has to offer. The tree that we planted together in Clarence Park symbolises the long-standing friendship between our two cities that continues to grow. Twinning visits like these are important in promoting the historic, leisure and cultural attractions of St Albans overseas.”
St Albans has been twinned with Worms since 1957. Worms lies on the Rhine south of Frankfurt and is the oldest city in Germany. It has a population of more than 80,000 and has Celtic, Roman and medieval heritage.
