Schools in Bloom competition winners revealed
Budding young gardeners have been rewarded for their hard work after taking part in the St Albans District Schools in Bloom competition.
Green-fingered pupils from 11 primary schools created flower displays and vegetable patches for the competition organised by St Albans City and District Council.
The competition aims to help children learn about wildlife and horticulture and support teachers in delivering the National Curriculum.
The winning schools were presented with prizes by the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Rosemary Farmer, at an awards ceremony on Friday 14 September.
The winners of the five competition categories are:
- Perfect for Pollinators – Manland Primary School in Harpenden. Pupils designed and created a beautiful flower display to attract and support bees as well as other pollinating insects.
- Vibrant Vegetables – Camp Primary & Nursery School in St Albans. The judges rewarded the school for growing a variety of vegetables.
- Wonderful Wildlife – Skyswood Primary School in St Albans. The pupils encouraged wildlife in the school garden by building bug hotels as well as bird and bat boxes.
- Scrapyard Scarecrow – Wood End School in Harpenden. The children designed and built a scarecrow made out of recycled goods.
- Super-Duper Sunflower – Wheatfields Infants’ & Nursery School in St Albans. The winners produced the tallest sunflower in the competition, measuring 2.04 metres.
The Mayor said:
I was impressed and delighted with the gardening skills and knowledge demonstrated by the pupils in creating their amazing gardens, flower displays and outdoor features. This project aims to help children learn about the cultivation of plants and how to care for the environment and wildlife.
Each of the winning schools received a prize that included seeds, hand tools, compost and bird feeders. Goody bags were also given to the other schools that took part in the competition.
The competition is supported by Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust and is sponsored by Carpenters Nursery and Homebase.
