£9K raised for counselling charity for young people
A cheque for £9,295.89 has been presented to Youth Talk by the former Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia.
The former Mayor raised the money for the charity through a series of events held during his year in office, which ended in May 2018.
The events included the Mayor’s Ball, the annual Civic Service, a tea party and a cooking demonstration by top local chefs.
Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said:
During my year as Mayor, I chose to raise funds for the charity Youth Talk as it provides a much-needed counselling service for young people. I want to thank everyone who supported the many events held on my behalf and who made donations for this wonderful charity.
Trevor Fromant, Chief Executive of Youth Talk said:
We were delighted to be selected by Councillor Zia, as his chosen charity for his term of office as Mayor. The £9,295.89 raised from the mayoral events is impressive and is already making a significant contribution towards this year’s funding requirements.
Of equal importance is the former Mayor’s help in raising Youth Talk’s profile, in particular among the local Islamic community. One of our key aims is to raise our profile amongst ethnic minorities. Twenty per cent of the young people who come to Youth Talk for help are now from ethnic minorities.
While Mayor, Cllr Zia also raised funds for homeless charity Open Door, by taking part in the annual Sleepout. He also donated to fundraising activities for the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy appeal.
