Older People's Day - All Welcome
Everyone is welcome to attend St Albans Older People’s Day to enjoy fun activities, gain useful information and meet new friends.
The annual event, sponsored this year by The National Care Line and organised by St Albans City and District Council, is taking place on Wednesday 16 October.
Held at the Alban Arena under the inspiring title of Flourishing Lives, it is free to attend and runs from 10am to 1pm with no tickets required.
Residents can drop in for a chat with a host of support and advice groups as well as the police, the fire service and the Council’s community safety team.
There will also be representatives from local clubs and societies, promoting their activities as well as giving demonstrations and taster sessions.
Free activities include the chance to design your slate coaster to take away, mini health checks and boules.
Visitors will also be able to meet therapy dogs from Rappaw and take away free bulbs from the green stand.
There will be music and entertainment including performances from the King of Herts Barbershop Chorus and U3A Ukulele band.
Council officers will be there to explain a range of services, including recycling, housing and benefits.
Most importantly, free tea, coffee and cake will be available while pupils from Fleetville Junior School and Loreto College have volunteered to help on the day.
Some of the groups and organisations present will be on the hunt for new volunteers to help run activities or services.
Cllr Anthony Rowlands, Portfolio Holder for Community, Leisure and Sport, said:
We want older people to feel part of our community and lead flourishing lives so that they do not become socially isolated.
This is a free event that offers information about vital services as well as how to participate in a range of social and fun activities, including art and keep-fit clubs. There will be details about volunteering opportunities, too.
It is a relaxed occasion allowing people to drop in for a chat, pick up leaflets, discover new activities and discuss any issues they have.
To help guide visitors round the event, there are four key themes:
- Having fun: music, art and entertainment, clubs, societies and social groups.
- Staying independent: adaptations, transport information, housing and benefits
- Being green: saving energy, recycle and reuse, allotments and parks.
- Keeping safe and well: police, fire service, trading standards, mini health checks and sports clubs.
