Older People's Day
Around 500 people attended St Albans Older People’s Day to make new friends, obtain useful information and enjoy a wide range of activities.
The annual event, held under the title of Flourishing Lives, took place at the Alban Arena.
It was sponsored by The National Care Line, organised by St Albans City and District Council and supported by charities, community groups, the police and the fire service.
The Council’s community safety team was also there as were representatives from local clubs and societies.
Free tea, coffee and cake were available while pupils from Fleetville Junior School and Loreto College volunteered to help out.
There was music and entertainment including performances from the Kings of Herts Barbershop Chorus and U3A Ukulele band.
Visitors also met therapy dogs from Rappaw and Council officers explained a range of services, including recycling, housing and benefits.
Councillor Jacqui Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Inclusion and Protection, said:
I was delighted with the attendance and was told this was one of the best turn-outs we’ve ever had.
The four key themes were keeping safe and well, being green, staying independent and having fun – and I think those messages were communicated very well.
The interest in the event shows that we are succeeding in our aim of reaching out to older people and encouraging them to lead flourishing lives so that they do not become socially isolated.
There was a wealth of information available about how to avoid that by making use of vital services or participating in a range of activities including keep-fit clubs. The event was also a great opportunity to have a chat and make some new friends.
