The Great British Spring Clean
Residents in the St Albans District are urged to tidy up their neighbourhood by volunteering for the Great British Spring Clean.
The campaign, run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, aims to inspire half-a-million people nationwide to go on a litter pick.
St Albans City and District Council is supporting the cause and is helping community groups, businesses and public-spirited individuals organise events.
The campaign runs from Friday 22 March for over four weeks until Tuesday 23 April with the aim of sprucing up streets, parks, green spaces and other public areas.
Last year around 370,000 volunteers across the UK collected more than 630,000 bags of rubbish.
Councillor Frances Leonard, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said:
I’ve been on a number of litter picks in the District. They’re run by people who care about their area and are willing to give up their spare time to make improvements.
I would encourage other people to get involved during the Great British Spring Clean. It is good fun to link up with other people and carry out such a valuable community task.
Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:
The Great British Spring Clean is an opportunity for the millions of people who care about the environment on their doorstep to do something positive that will make a visible difference.
We’re delighted that St Albans Council is supporting this year’s campaign and would like to thank them for that.
Without Councils across the country giving the campaign their backing, our volunteers would not be able to do the incredible job they do.
Residents can take part by organising a litter pick or joining one with more information available here: https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean
St Albans Council in partnership with its waste contractor Veolia is helping out by providing litter pickers and bags as well as arranging for the rubbish to be collected
