Four Green Flag Awards for outstanding parks and open spaces in St Albans District

Publication date:

Four Green Flag awards have been presented to St Albans City and District Council in recognition of its outstanding parks and open spaces.

The Green Flag, an international quality mark, was given to Verulamium Park, Clarence Park and Hatfield Road Cemetery.

Verulamium Park was also awarded Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the excellent management of its ancient Roman features. It was one of only 130 sites across the country to achieve this honour.

The Green Flag Award scheme is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

It recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark for green spaces across the United Kingdom and the world.

Councillor Helen Campbell, Chair of the Council’s Public Realm Committee and Lead for Parks, said:

I’m delighted that once again, we have been given four Green Flag awards, retaining those we won last year.

This is the result of the hard work and dedication of our parks and green spaces team along with our grounds maintenance contractor John O’Conner.

We want to provide our residents with wonderful places where they can relax, exercise or meet up with friends and family. This commitment involves providing open spaces of the highest standard despite the many financial challenges that we face.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd said:

I would like to congratulate everyone involved at St Albans City and District Council for its Green Flag Awards.

The Council offers vital green spaces for communities in St Albans District to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and it provides important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.

We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to they ensure high standards of the Green Flag Award; everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.

It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.

The Council has been receiving Green Flags for well over a decade. More information about the scheme is available here.
