Enjoy activities at free St Albans Older People’s Day

Publication date:

Come along to St Albans Older People’s Day on Wednesday 17 October to discover fun activities, meet friends and pick up all sorts of useful information and advice.

All are welcome at the free event at the Alban Arena which kicks off at 10am and runs until 1pm.

You can drop in for a chat with a host of support and advice groups as well as the police, the fire service and the community safety team.

There will also be representatives from local clubs and societies talking about their activities as well as giving demonstrations and taster sessions. Free activities include designing a jute shopping bag to take away, hand massages, golf and tennis tasters and much more.

Council officers will also be on hand to talk about a range of services, including recycling, housing and benefits.

Music and entertainment will be provided for everyone to enjoy with performances from U3A Ukulele bands and dance groups.

Free tea, coffee and cake will also be available at the event organised by St Albans City and District Council.

Some of the groups and organisations present will also be on the hunt for volunteers to help run activities or services. These include Shopmobility and the St Albans Volunteer Centre, which has volunteer roles involving fundraising, driving, conservation, support work, befriending and helping at events.

Cllr Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Inclusion at St Albans City and District Council, said:

It is important that older people feel part of our community and do not become socially isolated. This free event provides access to support services and information that will help them keep safe and well.

They can also find out about a range of social and fun activities, including art and keep-fit clubs, as well as volunteering opportunities to help others.

It is a relaxed event where people can just drop in for chat, pick up leaflets, discover activities to enjoy and discuss any issues they have.

To help guide visitors round the event, there are four key themes:

  • Keeping Safe and Well with the police, fire service, community safety team and support and advice groups on hand to answer questions.
  • Being Connected to Council services where information on recycling, benefits and housing will be available.
  • Having Fun and Learning about local clubs, societies and social groups while being entertained by music and demonstrations.
  • Staying Independent with access to information on transport and home adaptations.
