Debate on allotment fees and investment in St Albans city assets

Allotment fees and extra investment in St Albans assets are being discussed by St Albans City and District Council’s City Neighbourhoods Committee (CNC) on Wednesday 27 September. The CNC oversees the management of local assets in the city of St Albans, including smaller parks, public toilets and allotments.

It is currently looking at the pricing structure for city centre allotments over the next five years. Current fees
do not cover the cost to the District Council of servicing and managing the sites.

The CNC will also be considering a proposal to increase its special expenses budget in the future so it can
invest more in the assets it manages. The special expenses budget is the CNC’s main source of revenue
and currently amounts to £769,312 per annum.

Cllr Alun Davies, Chair of the City Neighbourhoods Committee of St Albans City and District Council, said: “The Committee is responsible for overseeing the management of assets in St Albans city centre. We need to look at whether the funds that we
have available are enough to cover the cost of managing and investing in these assets going forward.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting. It is being held in the Council Chamber at St Albans City and District Council’s offices at the Civic Centre, St Peter’s Street, St Albans from 7pm. The meeting is also being webcast.

The City Neighbourhoods Committee makes decisions on issues affecting residents in the eight unparished wards of the District. These are: Ashley, Batchwood, Clarence, Cunningham, Marshalswick South, Sopwell, St Peters and Verulam.
The Committee’s remit is non-strategic city assets including smaller parks, war memorials, allotments, public conveniences, playgrounds and open spaces.
The Committee includes elected Councillors and representatives from residents associations and neighbourhood forums meeting certain criteria.
