Crabtree Fields opens as a Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust

Publication date:

Two Mayors joined forces with Cubs from 10th Harpenden Scout Group on Thursday 16 July to launch Crabtree Fields as a Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust.

Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, Mayor of St Albans City and District, and Cllr Brian Ellis, Town Mayor of Harpenden, jointly unveiled a commemorative plaque at the fields. The plaque will show visitors to the Fields that the site is now protected as a recreational site for perpetuity.

The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge is a Fields in Trust legacy programme to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The programme aims to safeguard 2,012 outdoor recreation spaces across the country for future generations to enjoy.

Accordingly, St Albans City and District Council has dedicated Crabtree Fields as a recreation ground for the local community in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee.

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from 10th Harpenden have spent many hours over the last couple of years clearing rubbish and laying wood chips on the paths. Harpenden Town Council has arranged for some of the woodland footpaths to be cleared.

Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, Mayor of St Albans City and District, said: “I congratulate 10th Harpenden and all the other volunteers for working so hard to make Crabtree Fields a beautiful place for the whole community to enjoy.”

Cllr Brian Ellis, Town Mayor of Harpenden, said: “On behalf of the people of Harpenden, I want to thank the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, together with all their friends and relatives, for their hard work. Their hours of effort have transformed a neglected area into a beautiful green space to benefit the whole community.”

Russell Brooks, the District Commissioner for Scouts in Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Kimpton, said: “Crabtree Fields is a great example of Scouting working with the local community. I hope that many local people will enjoy the site for years to come.”
