Budding young artists win safety poster competition
Talented creators of posters highlighting road safety, fire hazards and the impact of cyberbullying have won a popular safety-themed art competition for school children.
Children from local primary schools were invited to enter the competition after taking part in Crucial Crew safety sessions on how to deal with everyday hazards and dangers.
The winners of the safety poster competition were presented with prizes by the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans at a special ceremony yesterday.
They are:
- Ben Pendell from Aldwickbury School, Harpenden, who featured cyberbullying in his poster;
- Jack Ritchie from Maple Primary School, St Albans, who focused on road safety, and
- Jonah Howgego from Maple Primary School, who chose fire safety as his topic.
The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Rosemary Farmer, said:
I was really impressed with these talented young artists and their winning posters which convey important messages about safety. The competition is always popular and attracted more than 100 entries this year from young people who attended Crucial Crew safety awareness-raising sessions. These practical sessions provide children with tips on how to deal with everyday hazards and dangers in the home and outdoors, as well as promote online safety.
Crucial Crew and the art competition are run each year by St Albans City and District Community Safety Partnership (CSP).
More than 1,200 children from 27 schools attended Crucial Crew safety sessions earlier this year.
The children were guided through ten scenarios by CSP members, including Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and St Albans City and District Council. Assisting in delivering the sessions were 45 students from Oaklands College who are studying for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services.
Three of the students were chosen to receive special awards from the Mayor at the ceremony in the District Council’s Chamber:
- Thomas Martin
- Alexander Johns
- Callum Hutchinson
Cllr Farmer said:
These three students are to be congratulated on their hard work; going above and beyond to make the Crucial Crew experience worthwhile for the primary school pupils. They were highly-motivated, engaged well with the participants, and actively helped to deliver the safety sessions.
The sessions covered the following topics and services:
- First aid;
- Fire safety;
- Anti-social behaviour;
- Cyber safety;
- Electrical safety;
- The dangers of alcohol and drugs;
- Road safety;
- The role of resilience services, including the fire service and the police.
- The Samaritans confidential support service.
- Billy’s Wish, a charity working to stamp out knife crime through education.
