Local Government Association Peer Challenges
About Local Government Association Peer Challenges
The Local Government Association offers a 'Peer Challenge' service to councils to help them understand the extent to which they are performing well, and to provide ideas to help them develop further.
The peer challenge approach involves a team of experienced officers and councillors spending time with another council as ‘peers’ to provide challenge and share learning. Participating councils receive a comprehensive report and recommendations from the peer team and then identify their own action plan to respond.

LGA Peer Challenge, St Albans City and District Council, February 2023
The Council invited the Local Government Association to arrange a Peer Challenge to review various activities and share their learning and good practice. A panel of experienced officers and councillors from other councils came to spend a week with us at the end of February 2023. Below you can find:
- The final report from that visit, including the Peer Review Panel's recommendations.
- The Council's Action Plan.
- The Position Statement that the Council provided for the Panel.
The panel came back for a return visit on 15 December 2023 to see how the Council was progressing with the implementation of recommendations, producing a follow up report shortly afterwards.
