Council gains white ribbon status
St Albans City and District Council has gained White Ribbon status – showing that it is working to end male violence against women.
White Ribbon UK is part of a global movement aimed at bringing a halt to violence against women.
The charity engages with individuals and organisations, asking them to take a stand and take the White Ribbon promise.
This is a commitment to never take part in, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women.
The Council’s Community Protection Team successfully applied for accreditation.
They will encourage all staff to make the White Ribbon Promise and w hold at least one awareness raising event or activity each year.
In addition, they will work to ensure that women across the District who experience violence know where to get help.
Principal Officer Neil Kieran has become one of White Ribbon UK’s Ambassadors, volunteers who promote a culture of equality and respect within their workplace and beyond.
Councillor Chris White, the Council Leader, said:
I am delighted that we are supporting White Ribbon UK and have been accredited by them for the work we are doing on this important issue.
Our Community Protection Team are leading our efforts to identify and deal with harassing, sexist and violent behaviour.
We can’t, of course, do this on our own and we urge businesses and other organisations across the District to also seek White Ribbon status and for people to take the White Ribbon promise.
All of us all need to work together to raise awareness, educate and campaign to end violence against women if we are to bring about significant change.
