Older People’s information event for St Albans District

Publication date:

A pop-up event offering advice and guidance to older people on many key issues is to visit four locations in St Albans District.

The initiative has been organised by St Albans City and District Council and its partner organisation Communities 1st as a follow-up to International Older Person’s Day which was on Friday 1 October.

There will be a stall offering useful information on keeping safe and well, having fun and staying independent.

Visitors will be able to chat with representatives from Hertfordshire Police about crime prevention and how to make their home more secure.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will be on hand to provide advice on home safety.

And the county’s Trading Standards department will be there to advise people on how to spot scams and consumer cons.

Charities that work with older people across the District will also be present to discuss the services they provide.

These include Herts Independent Living Service, St Albans Older Peoples’ Trust, Redbourn Care Group, Friends of the Jubilee Centre and Small Acts of Kindness.

The pop-up event will be held at the following locations:

  • Marshalswick Library, the Ridgeway, St Albans, on Monday 18 October, 10am to noon (outside).
  • London Colney Community Centre, Caledon Road, on Tuesday 19 October, 11am to 1pm (outside).
  • The Civic Centre, St Peter’s Street, St Albans Wednesday 20 October, 10am to 1pm (outside).
  • Redbourn Village Hall, the High Street, on Thursday 21 October, 9.30am to 11.30am (inside).

Councillor Jacqui Taylor, Chair of the Council’s Housing and Inclusion Committee, said:

We are marking The International Day of Older Persons with this series of valuable information events.

We will be offering a wealth of advice and guidance on many of the most important issues facing older people and the support services that are available to them.

There will be helpful information on a wide range of matters including how to maintain good physical and mental health, protecting your home and guarding against the scourge of loneliness.

This is a wonderful opportunity for older people to have a chat with their Council, police force, trading standards department plus some of the voluntary organisations doing such fabulous work in our community.

I urge the District’s older people to come along to the stall at a location that suits them as I am sure they will find it very beneficial.
