Fly-tipper fined after dumping waste in St Albans
A 26-year-old man has been ordered to pay £460 after dumping a box while working on a car underneath the M1 bridge at Bedmond Lane, St Albans.
The St Albans man was working on the car with a friend on 1 January when he discarded the box, believed to have contained brake calipers.
Following an investigation by St Albans City and District Council, the man appeared at St Albans Magistrates Court on 16 August.
He pleaded guilty to abandoning on land in the open air in Bedmond Lane, St Albans a box, contrary to section 2(1)(b) Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978.
The court took into account the man’s early guilty plea and fined him £265. He was also ordered to pay costs of £165 and a victim surcharge of £30, making a total sum payable of £460.
Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for Environment for St Albans City and District Council, said: “Many people hate fly-tipping and the ugly sight of waste dumped at the roadside. The Council takes a hard line on fly-tippers, prosecuting people where there is evidence to show that they are responsible for dumping waste. This case is the latest in a string of prosecutions we have brought for fly-tipping related offences.”
If anyone sees people dumping waste, call the police on 999, tell them where the crime is in progress and pass on as much information as possible. Make a note of the vehicle registration number and take photos if possible, but do not approach the fly-tippers. The non-emergency number for the police is 101.
