Green Flag success for six parks and green spaces in St Albans District
Green Flag Awards have been won by Verulamium Park, Clarence Park, Sopwell Nunnery Green Space, Hatfield Road Cemetery, Rothamsted Park and Bricket Wood Common. Verulamium Park has also been awarded the prestigious Green Heritage accreditation for the first time.
Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, announced the awards on Thursday 23 July and formal presentations will be made at Castle Hall, Hertford, on Thursday 13 August.
Managed by St Albans City and District Council, the six parks and green spaces are among 1,582 others to receive the international Green Flag Award this year.
Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for Environment at St Albans City and District Council, said: “I am delighted that six parks and green spaces in St Albans District have quite rightly been officially recognised as among the best in the country. Verulamium Park has also deservedly been awarded the prestigious Green Heritage accreditation. I want to thank our parks team and our contractors, John O’Conner, and especially the many local volunteers for their hard work in making this possible. I hope this encourages local residents to make the most of these special places which remind us how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country.”
Green Flag Awards are given annually by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. They indicate to visitors that the park or green space is well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities.
To win its first Green Heritage Award, Verulamium Park was rated highly for how the Council conserves, enhances and helps people enjoy its heritage value.
