Taste the best and raise money for charity

Publication date:

Two highlights not to be missed in St Albans and Harpenden Food and Drink Festival are the specially created #KidsCookalong recipe and the Mayor’s Charity Tasting Evening.

St Albans City and District Council, organisers of the festival, commissioned local food-writer, Ren Behan, to create a recipe suitable for 5-15 year olds to make themselves. The result is the healthy and delicious St Albans Seasonal Salad with ingredients that were traditionally sourced locally, such as watercress and goat’s cheese. The recipe is beautifully illustrated by Stu McLellan and is available online, in the events brochure and from the Charter Market on Saturdays 26 September and 4 October. Local schools, including St Peter’s and Fleetville Infants School, have got involved too, encouraging their students to have a go. Everyone can share their creations on social media using the hashtag #kidscookalong.

Tickets are available now for the fantastic foodie treat that is the Mayor’s Charity Tasting Evening on Thursday 24 September. This event is a unique opportunity to learn from chefs from local restaurants including Tabure, Dylan’s at the Kings Arms and Freddies. The chefs will demonstrate, prepare and share samples of seasonal delicacies. Wine and cocktails will be available from Flagship Wines and Mokoko’s. There will also be a silent auction of quality prizes with all proceeds from the evening going to Keech Hospice Care.

Get your tickets now for the Tasting Evening that starts at 7pm for 7:30pm at Poggenpohl Showroom in London Road, St Albans. The £20 tickets are available from the Tourist Information Centre and include wine or soft drinks.

Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, Mayor of St Albans City and District, said: “First I want to congratulate five-year-old Matilda [pictured] for the delicious-looking St Albans Seasonal Salad that she made; I hope everyone will enjoy making one.

“I also want to invite everyone to join me for my Charity Tasting Evening that takes place during the festival. It promises to be an extremely entertaining time, with lots of opportunities to sample wonderful food. The event is raising much-needed funds for Keech Hospice Care, the wonderful charity that provides specialist palliative care for children in St Albans District and across Hertfordshire. Don’t miss out, please get your tickets today.”
