Improving the District

Publication date:

The resurfacing of the yard surrounding Sea Cadet HQ is one of the improvements made to the St Albans District in the past three months.

Work was also undertaken at the Alban Arena, the Green Ring around St Albans, the Sopwell Nunnery and Longacres Recreation Ground.

Details of recent work to St Albans City and District Council land and property were  given to a Cabinet meeting on 20 October 2015.

A series of projects due to be completed over the next six months were  also revealed.

St Albans Sea Cadets is a voluntary organisation that works with the Royal Navy to give young people aged 10 to 18 a taste of life at sea.  It has its HQ at Westminster Lodge.

Emergency stone work repairs were completed at the Nunnery in Cottonmill Lane.

The Green Ring cycling and walking route was extended along Sandpit Lane and  paths at Longacres Recreation Ground were relaid.

Projects scheduled for the next few months include renewal of  the steps behind the Causeway at Verulamium Park.

Bus shelters are to be installed at Batchwood Drive and Griffiths Way and some essential improvements made to Bricket Road car park.

Work to bridges at Redbourn High Street and  Luton Road  is now expected to be completed in December.

Other work is ahead of schedule including the redecoration of St Michael’s changing rooms in Verulamium Park and a new fire alarm at the Alban Arena. These projects are due to complete by the end of this month.

Councillor  Brian Ellis Portfolio Holder for Housing at St Albans City and District Council, said: “We invest in our buildings and other assets to keep them in the best possible condition.

“The work can make a real difference to people’s lives, whether it’s enhancing enjoyment of Council-owned facilities or making the buildings people use as safe as possible.”
