More Social Housing Opens
Social rented flats remodelled for the over-55s by St Albans City and District Council have been completed with tenants now starting to move in.
Sparrow Court, on Brewhouse Hill, Wheathampstead, was modernised at a cost of around £1.5 million and took under a year to complete.
It provides 13 flats, of one or two bedrooms, that have been specially designed for older people and replaces the previous sheltered accommodation of mainly bedsits.
Priority is given to former tenants, residents of Wheathampstead and those downsizing to free up three or four bedroom rented family homes.
It is one of a number of housing schemes that has been opened recently for people on the Council’s housing register.
Others, including Parkside View, in Marshalswick, St Albans, have been re-developed by housing associations.
Cllr Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing for St Albans City and District Council, said: “Sparrow Court has been remodelled by the Council.
“It is the biggest project of its kind that we have undertaken for over twenty years.
“It’s is an exciting project, providing high quality homes and making a real difference to people’s lives.
