Come to the Mayor’s Carol Concert

Publication date:

The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, invites you to join him for a traditional Christmas carol concert. The concert takes place beside the war memorial at the top of St Peter’s Street, St Albans, on Sunday 13 December, from 4pm until approximately 4:45pm. The Mayor will be accompanied by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Gill Clark, and the Mayoress, Mrs Maureen Gaygusuz.

Jake Wood took a break from rehearsals for the Alban Arena pantomime, “Peter Pan”, to help the Mayor prepare for the event. Jake plays Max Branning in BBC’s ”EastEnders” and is also known for his performances in “Strictly Come Dancing”. Jake will not be able to attend the carol concert as he will be taking part in the Sunday matinee performance at the Alban Arena.

The Mayor will be joined by clergy from local churches, including the Rev Em Coley, Mayor’s Chaplain and Vicar at St Leonard’s Church, Sandridge. Other clergy taking part in the service are Rev Jos Perris of St Peter’s Church and Rev Richard Watson, Sub-Dean of St Albans Cathedral. Music will be provided by St Albans City Band and St Peter’s Choir will join in the singing.

The event will raise funds for Rennie Grove Hospice Care, one of the Mayor’s charities, and a collection for the charity will be held during the service.

People attending the service are invited to remember loved ones who are no longer with us by lighting a small candle during the concert. They can also write the names of their loved ones on colourful wristbands and place them on the railings surrounding the ‘St Albans Christmas Peace Tree'. The wristbands are available for sale from the Blacksmiths Arms pub, the Cock pub and the nearby Rumball Sedgwick estate agents. Money raised from the wristbands will support the Mayor’s Charities, Rennie Grove Hospice and Keech Hospice Care, the Mayor’s charity.

During the service, people will also be invited to place messages or prayers for peace on the railings.

Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, Mayor of St Albans City and District, said: “Please come to share in this community carol concert where we will sing together about the real meaning of Christmas. The themes for my mayoral year are love and peace, which seem especially relevant this year. During the concert there will be the opportunity to light a candle in remembrance of someone dear to you. Everyone is welcome to join us and help raise funds for Rennie Grove Hospice Care.”

Mulled wine and mince pies will be on sale at The Blacksmiths Arms pub nearby and all funds raised will go to Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
