Polling stations review

Publication date:

A review of polling stations for Parliamentary elections in the St Albans District is underway.

St Albans City and District Council is conducting the review which is required by law to take place every five years.

Each polling station serves a clearly-defined polling district and these are also being looked at.

The Council has now started a public consultation which runs until Friday 29 March.

Any elector or organisation within either the St Albans or the Harpenden and Hitchin Parliamentary constituencies can provide feedback.

They can, for example, give their views on existing polling stations and districts and suggest alternatives.

The Council would particularly like to hear from any person or group with experience or expertise on access for people with a disability.

After the consultation ends, the Council will assess the responses to see if there is a need to make changes to existing polling stations.

The Acting Returning Officer may make recommendations to a meeting of the Council’s Licensing and Regulatory Committee in October. The Committee will then decide whether to make changes.

These will be confirmed when the electoral register is republished on 1 December 2019 and would take effect at any election held after that date.

Michael Lovelady, the Acting Returning Officer, said:

Many of our polling stations are at long-established locations and a lot of people will be familiar with them. If anyone has concerns, this is their chance to raise them.

Feedback should be submitted to the Council’s Electoral Services team by email to elections@stalbans.gov.uk.

Alternatively, comments can be sent by letter to Electoral Services, St Albans City and District Council, Civic Centre, St Albans. AL1 3JE.
