Flourishing Lives - Celebrating UN International Day of Older Persons: All Welcome
Everyone is invited to a series of events in St Albans District to celebrate International Day of Older Persons.
St Albans City and District Council is staging the drop-in sessions along with partner organisations to highlight the contribution older people make to our community.
There will be opportunities to find out about services which can help residents keep safe and well, get connected and stay independent.
People can drop in for a chat at the pop-up events in St Albans, Harpenden, London Colney and Redbourn.
Council officers will be on hand to explain a range of services including housing and benefits.
Representatives from the Police, Trading Standards and the Fire Service will also be in attendance to talk about issues such as crime prevention.
Citizens Advice, Communities 1st, Age UK and other groups which work with older people will also be present at the Flourishing Lives events.
Free refreshments will be available with the events taking place at:
- London Colney Caledon Centre on Monday 9 October 9.30am-Noon
- Redbourn Village Hall on Thursday 12 October 9.30am-Noon.
- Harpenden Library on Monday 16 October 10am-1pm.
- St Albans Library on Wednesday 18 October 11am-2pm.
International Day of Older Persons, which was created by the United Nations, is held this year on Sunday 1 October and is followed by weeks of dedicated events.
Councillor Sarwar Shamsher, Lead Councillor for Inclusion, said:
The theme of this year’s International Day is the protection of the human rights of older people.
It is therefore fitting that we will be making older people aware at our events of the support services that they have a right to make use of.
As well as information about vital services, there will be details about volunteering to help others and how to participate in a range of social activities, including art and keep-fit clubs.
We want to ensure our older people take full advantage of all the opportunities available to them so they can lead flourishing lives and not become socially isolated.
We want to stress that these are inclusive events which everyone is welcome to attend. These are relaxed occasions and people can just drop in for a chat, pick up leaflets, discover new activities and discuss any issues they have.
