For all positions we can offer a great remuneration package including competitive salaries, Local Government Pension Scheme, minimum annual leave of 23 days a year, home working/flexible working (where applicable), train season ticket loan, health initiatives and a leisure discount scheme. And these are just some of the many benefits you'll receive when you join us.


Pay scale increments are paid each April subject to satisfactory performance after annual performance appraisals are completed. There may also be an annual ‘cost of living’ award, which is agreed nationally.

We offer Child Care Vouchers through a Salary Sacrifice Scheme. Employees participating in the scheme get relief from paying tax and National Insurance on the amount of salary exchanged for vouchers.

Our flexible working scheme encompasses a number of staff benefits that allow you to maintain a healthy work life balance while you are working at the Council. Our benefits include:

  • Flexi-time – employees are able to choose their working pattern as long as they fulfil their contracted working hours and are working in the Council’s core hours, subject to service needs.
  • Mobile working – subject to the role requirements passing a probation period, and manager discretion employees are able to work from mobile locations, such as at home.
  • Range of working patterns – Our employees are offered a range of working patters including: full time, part-time, job share, term time working, partial home working, full home working, compressed hours i.e. 4 day week or 9 day fortnight. Please ask about working patterns when you apply for a job.



The lowest holiday entitlement for employees is 23 days, rising to 27 days after 5 years of service. You have the option of using your flexi-time entitlement to take an extra day of holiday if you work an additional day of overtime in a four week period.

Please ask what the holiday entitlement is for the job which interest you.

Part-time staff are entitled to holidays and bank holidays on a proportional (pro-rata) basis.

Local Government Pension Scheme


You are automatically enrolled on the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) when you start with the Council. The LGPS is one of the most generous and secure pension schemes available in any employment sector and is the career average in the English and Welsh public sector.

The LGPS benefits include:

  • Tax relief on your contributions, which are added to by the Council

  • Early retirement and flexible retirement is possible

Reimbursement of Professional Subscriptions

We will pay your subscription to one professional body per year if it is essential to the post that you be professionally qualified e.g. RTPI, RICS, etc.

We currently have free car parking for employees next to the Council Offices in the centre of St Albans.

Govia Train Season Ticket Loan and Discount Scheme


We offer a generous discounts on point to point season tickets on the Govia Thames Link train service. Currently Council employees can obtain:

  • up to a 50% discount on monthly/ annual season ticket with Govia ThamesLink on specified journeys.
  • A 10% discount on ‘create your own period’ Govia season tickets.

Employees can also obtain am interest free loan on annual season tickets (providing you are employed full time, or on a contract that ends a year or more later)

Centrebus Season Ticket discount (Route 34)

A £15 discount is available for Council staff on three month bus season tickets for Route 34 from Dunstable to St Albans.

Sport and Leisure Discounts


We want our employees to keep healthy and active, and encourage this through several internally run sports clubs (including football, badminton and Pilates) as well as discounted rates at a number of our sport and leisure centres in St Albans. These include:

  • 1Life (formally Leisure Connection) who have facilities at various venues around the district including Abbey View Golf & Track Facility, Alban Arena, Batchwood Golf Course & Sports Centre, Harpenden Public Halls, Harpenden Sports Centre and Harpenden Swimming Pool
  • Sports and Leisure Management Limited (SLM) at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre.



The council has the necessary facilities to support staff who chose to cycle into work, including showers and secure bike lockers exclusively for our staff at our Civic Centre office.

We also provide interest free loans and discounts on selected bike and equipment purchases.

Even if you do not own a bike staff have the opportunity to use the Council Pool Bikes for site visits and meetings, which are available at the district offices.

Employee Assistance Programme

We offer access to a free and confidential 24/7 telephone line for counselling, support and advice that is available to all staff and members of their immediate family.
