The event aims to help older people participate in community life by highlighting various activities, interest groups, learning and volunteering opportunities as well as sources of support.

Everyone will be invited to join in arts activities, play board games, watch an exercise demonstration and have a go at bowls with the Harperbury Bowls Club.

A photographic exhibition about ‘Stepping into the future’ and celebrating life in older age will also be on display for all to enjoy. Students from Oaklands College have put together the exhibition for the St Albans Older People’s Day event which runs from 10am to 1pm.

When the doors open guests will be welcomed with music performed by the University of the Third Age Ukulele band.  The Deputy Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Jamie Day, will also be available to greet everyone.

After touring round information stands,  guests can relax and enjoy free tea, coffee and cake, provided by Herts Belles, St Albans Women’s Institute.

There will also be the opportunity to listen to safety talks from Hertfordshire Constabulary and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In addition, Councillors from St Albans City and District Council will be on hand to discuss local issues as part of Local Democracy Week. Other organisations present on the day will include Computer Friendly, Shopmobility, St Albans Bereavement Network, St Albans Old People’s Trust, St Albans CVS, and Herts Vision Loss. Some of these organisations are seeking new volunteers and are keen to tap into the knowledge and skills that older people have.

Cllr Brian Ellis, Housing and Inclusion Portfolio Holder for St Albans City and District Council, said:  “Everyone is welcome to drop in to celebrate older people and discover and discuss new ways to get involved in community life. This event aims to help people enjoy life to the full and to participate in society, whatever their age. Older people have a great deal to contribute, whether that is taking up new activities, joining community groups, volunteering for charities, or getting involved with local issues.”

The theme for this year’s event is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society”. This mirrors the theme for the United Nations International Day of Older Persons which took place on October 1.
