They were among 7,000 competitors taking part in the Half Marathon, Walking Half Marathon and 5k and 1.5mile fun runs on Sunday 11 June in Verulamium Park.

The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Mohammad Iqbal Zia, was on hand to launch all four races.

The Mayor also found time to give the Council team words of encouragement before they successfully completed the 13.1mile Half Marathon to raise funds for Youth Talk. The charity provides a confidential counselling service for young people, aged 13 to 25, who live, work or are in education in St Albans District.

The Council’s team included Council Leader Cllr Alec Campbell, Cllr Anthony Rowlands, Chief Executive James Blake and six other council officers. They are well on the way to achieving their fundraising target of £1,000 for Youth Talk, having already raised more than £800.

The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said: “I was amazed by the number of people taking part in St Albans Half Marathon and supporting races, making this a fantastic community event. I thank them all for their efforts in helping to raise funds for a great variety of charities. One of these is Youth Talk, the charity I have chosen to support during my year in office. It provides much-needed confidential counselling sessions and advice for young people who may feel depressed, or who are worried about family problems, bullying or abuse.”

Trevor Fromant, Chief Executive of Youth Talk, said: “St Albans Half Marathon is a tremendous community event with a lot of young people taking part which is good. We are grateful to the Mayor, the Council Team and other supporters of Youth Talk who participated in the event for raising the charity’s profile and funds.”
