What is Shopmobility?

Shopmobility is a scheme which provides battery powered scooters and manual wheelchairs to help people who have limited mobility to get to all that St Albans City centre has to offer - from shops and banks to tourist and leisure attractions. Similar schemes operate in around 300 towns in the country.

Who is it for?

Anyone who has difficulty in getting around, through a permanent or temporary disability, illness, accident or age. You don't have to be a registered disabled person, a regular wheelchair user or a blue badge holder

Where are we?

The St. Albans Shopmobility office is located on the ground floor entrance of the Drovers Way car park (off Catherine Street behind BHS).

How much does it cost?

A wheelchair can be hired for up to 4 weeks at a cost of £5 per week or part week.

There is no charge for the scooters or one day loan of manual wheelchairs, however we do welcome donations to help us to meet the running costs, ensure its future success and enable us to extend the scheme so that more people can enjoy the freedom that Shopmobility gives them.

Disabled Car Parking?

Reserved disabled car parking spaces are available next to the scheme's office in Drovers Way car park. A disabled RADAR toilet is nearby. You can purchase a RADAR key from Shopmobility at a cost of £2.50.

On the first visit customers will be asked for two items of identification (eg Driving licence, benefit book showing your name and address, medical card etc) to register with the scheme for insurance purposes. You will be given a registration card and number to use when you come along to borrow the equipment. A member of the staff will demonstrate the use of the equipment and when the customer is confident in its use they will be free to use the vehicles to visit anywhere in the town centre. At the end of the visit, you simply return the scooter or wheelchair to the Shopmobility office. Scooters can be borrowed for the duration of the day and wheelchairs can be borrowed for up to 4 weeks.
