Most vehicle crime is preventable. It can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car.

It might sound obvious, but make sure you lock the doors and shut the windows and sunroof whenever you leave your vehicle unattended.

If at all possible, leave nothing on view. Taking a few simple measures can protect your car and the property within it from theft.

  • if it's just for a few minutes
  • Never leave documents in your car
  • Never leave the ignition key in an unattended vehicle - even when filling up with petrol
  • Never leave any property on display
  • Park in a well lit area
  • Etch the vehicle registration number on all glass surfaces
  • Mark your satellite navigation with the your number plate
  • Remove the Sat Nav mounting stalk and wipe away any suction mark left on the windscreen
  • Consider buying locking screw kits to secure number plates which are targeted by criminals

If you do see suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood please report it to the Police. Call Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101 with your information.

Remember if you witness a crime in progress, call 999.
