Apprenticeships Toggle accordion
Apprenticeships are a great way to earn and learn. You get to build your skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and usually some classroom learning. On completion, you’ve gained a nationally recognised qualification and usually the offer of a full-time job.
They are now open to anyone aged 16+. Apart from being a great way for school or college leavers to continue education in a working environment, they are now an opportunity for adults looking to return to work or change career. Our employees can access apprenticeship levy funds which provide an opportunity to upskill and gain a recognised qualification.
Our apprenticeships cover a wide range of roles in areas such as:
- Business and administration
- Customer Service
- Finance
- Housing
- Human Resources
- IT
- Town Planning

Summer graduate internships Toggle accordion
Our summer internship programme is a great way to gain practical experience of working in local government and see if it is the career for you. We offer a number of placements each summer, working within one of our service areas.
You will work with us on a fixed term three-month contract and your placement will provide an opportunity to:-
- Increase your confidence, skills and knowledge
- Improve your understanding of the sector
- Gain an insight into the way the council operates and the challenges we face
- Build your network of work colleagues
If you have recently graduated or are entering your final year at university this would be an ideal opportunity to put your knowledge into practice in a busy and challenging work environment.

Career pathways
Once you’re with us, we’ll help you develop your career pathway. In some areas we have established formal career pathways.
For example, our Planning and Building Control service area offers a range of routes to help you progress and build your career.
Casual work at the council
We are looking for flexible individuals who are interested in working for us on short-term casual opportunities. Roles can vary between generic admin to erecting stalls for the St Albans Market and everything in between – and in all areas across the council.
What is a casual worker? Toggle accordion
A casual worker is someone who agrees to undertake work, but who is under no obligation to accept the hours offered. At the same time the council does not have to offer hours on a regular basis, but purely on an 'as and when required' basis. Generally, casuals are used to cover sickness, periods of annual leave or special project-based work.

The Electoral Services office takes on casual staff at different times of the year to help run elections and the annual canvass of voters. Find out more about their roles and how to apply.
